Understanding Blanket Yardage Calculations

Running out of yarn when you are 90% finished with a blanket is one of the most frustrating experiences in fiber crafts. Finding another skein with the exact same dye-lot number can be nearly impossible. This calculator solves that problem by applying tested Craft Yarn Council (CYC) surface area formulas to estimate your exact material needs before you purchase your yarn.

How do I calculate how much yarn I need for a blanket?

To calculate total blanket yardage, multiply your blanket length in inches by width in inches to get the square inches. Then multiply square inches by the yarn weight factor (0.55 for Worsted #4 weight, 0.40 for Bulky #5 weight) and add a 10% safety margin for tension variations.

How many skeins of yarn do I need for a standard throw blanket?

A standard 50 x 60 inch throw blanket made with Medium Worsted (#4) weight yarn requires approximately 1,800 total yards. If your yarn skeins contain 200 yards each, you will need 9 skeins of yarn.

Why should I add a 10% wastage margin to my yardage calculation?
